How to: Cleaning Your Dishwasher with Citric Acid

The heart of the home is the kitchen. It is where we can prepare meals for our family, show artwork from the kids, and have fun with friends. It sets the tone for the rest in the home so I do my best to keep it as clean and fresh as possible.

I love a clean home and I make sure it is cleaned at least once per month. While I’m quick to clean surfaces and floors that I can see, I forget about the hidden areas. There have been many times when I forgot about them, resulting in strange odors from different areas of my house. The dishwasher is the one area in my kitchen that I struggle with the most. Sometimes I have to deal with a stale dishwasher. I have searched the internet for ways to deodorize it. I tried a number of methods before I decided to share my favorite ones with you.

So you don’t need to look, I have compiled all my tried-and-true methods in one place. Do you want to know how to clean and deodorize dishwashers? Here are some of the ways that I clean my Sharp Slide in Stainless Steel Dishwasher. Let’s get started, without further delay!

Dishwasher Filter

When I was browsing through TikTok, I discovered that dishwashers had filters in them. And that the filters also needed to be cleaned. You can imagine my surprise when I found out that my college apartments didn’t have dishwashers and I hadn’t seen my parents clean their dishwasher filter.

First, remove the filter from the dishwasher to clean it. A filter is located at the bottom of most dishwashers. Slide the bottom rack out to access the filter. You will then see the filter at its bottom. Simply unscrew the filter to remove it. You can dispose of all food and grime that has been collected from the filter by placing it in the trash. Place the filter in a bowl or sink filled with hot water and dish soap. After letting the filter soak for about 30 minutes, place it back in the dishwasher. It is crucial to keep track of the order and place of all items that you have removed so everything goes back in its proper order. Here’s a quick shot of me before.

My first instinct when I notice a strange smell coming from my dishwasher is to clean it. To ensure there is no buildup, this should be repeated every couple of weeks. If the smell persists after I wash the filter with soapy water, or if I want to make sure it is clean thoroughly, I will use another cleaning method.
